Toxoplasma gondii
Toxoplasmosis is caused by infection with the intracellular protozoa parasite, Toxoplasma gondii. One form of the disease, congenitally acquired toxoplasmosis,
can result in severe central nervous system malformations or perinatal mortality. Other forms of the disease range from chronic, asymptomatic Toxoplasma
infection to ocular infection and adult disseminated cerebral toxoplasmosis.
Toxoplasmosis can be severe in individuals with immunodeficiencies and neonates infected in utero. Individuals undergoing immunosuppressive therapies and
those with immunological disorders are at significant risk of contracting severe toxoplasmosis, which may be fatal.
