Dengue Fever The mosquito borne dengue viruses ( serotype 1-4 ) causes dengue fever, a severe flu like illness. This disease used to be called "break-bone" fever because it sometimes causes severe joint and muscle pain that feels like bones are breaking, hence the name. Health experts have known about dengue fever for more than 200 years. WHO estimated that 50-80 million cases of dengue fever occur worldwide in each year, including a potentially fatal form of the disease called hemorrhagic and dengue shock syndrom. Primary infection with dengue virus results in a self –limiting disease characterized by mild to high fever lasting 3-7 days. Dengue fever is found mostly during and shortly after the rainy season in tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, South Asia and China, India, Caribbean and Central and South America, Australia and South Pacific.
